Dr. Frank Marsik teaches elementary school students about CYGNSS

marsikOn May 14, more than 2,000 elementary school students attended the Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor.

At the Olympiad there were hands-on experimental stations for participating students and their siblings to explore their interests. Associate Research Scientist Frank Marsik hosted one of the stations, which focused on NASA’s Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS).

At the CYGNSS station students had the opportunity to make clouds in a bottle and build anemometers. Marsik says that during the event, which ran from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, 700 anemometers were made.

CYGNSS is a constellation of eight small satellites that will be carried to low-Earth orbit on a single launch vehicle. The satellites aim to improve weather forecasting by making accurate measurements of ocean surface winds in and near the eye of the storm throughout the full life cycle of tropical cyclones, typhoons and hurricanes. These measurements will advance forecasting methods by providing data that can lead to reliable predictions of hurricane intensity.

CYGNSS will launch in Fall 2016 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.
